Research into music channels - Miss Georgiou.

Music channels have played a huge role in the devolopment of music videos within the music industry. Music channels have provided artists with a platform to promote their music videos and made it easier for them to access their target audience. They have also made it more simple for fans to access their favourite artists music, meaning that the music industry has become even bigger. I will be researching the music channels that exist in the modern day and how they make it easy for artists to access their target audience.

MTV's target audience is 12 - 30 year olds. MTV plays pop and mainstream music that features in the charts. Artists that feature on MTV on a regular basis are Beyonce, Rhianna, Chris Brown and Jay Z. This appeals to people all across the world as these are all well known, popular music artists; this is why MTV is the biggest and most influential music channel. MTV has been used as a form of branding as it allows artists to advertise their products, as the channel has so many viewers. This means when artists release a new album one of the first places they look to promote it is MTV. The MTV brand attracts potential customers who may purchase the artists songs as the audience may think if the artist is on MTV then they must be good. MTV also own other channels such as Nickelodeon and VH1. The MTV logo appeals to the target audience as it uses bold colours black and white which demonstrate originality. This logo reflects the powerful artists that the channel shows and also makes it seem more desirable to the audience. Furthermore they make the logo stand out. The logo also features graffiti style writing, this represents the younger and more edgy aspect of their target audience.

Kerrang has a target audience is 15 - 25 year olds, and is more of a specialised music channel that aims towards fans of a certain genre. In order to appeal to this target audience the channel features music that is moulded for a younger audience. Kerrang mostly plays music from the rock genre. Artists that feature on Kerrang on a regular basis are Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones and Sleeping with Sirens. These are popular artists from the rock genre and will therefore attract fans of the genre. The Kerrang logo appeals to its target audience as again it is bold and stands out with the font used. Also the aggressive font demonstrates that the brand mostly plays music from the rock genre. The logo features an exclamation mark, the effect this creates is that the word Kerrang is being shouted, which makes it conventional to the rock genre which is often associated with loud screaming. The channel is used as a form of branding in a similar way to MTV, artists use Kerrang as a way to popularise themselves and their songs to an audience that are most likely to enjoy their style of music.

VH1 has a target audience for 18 - 40 years old, which means that it has something for everyone. VH1 plays pop and mainstream music that features in the charts, much like MTV. This therefore means that it appeals to a mainstream target audience who like consistent music. Artists that feature on this music channel on a regular basis are Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran and Arctic Monkeys. Again all of these are very popular artists that will attract many people to watch the channel. As you can see these artists are all from different genres, this demonstrates how VH1 appeals to everyone. The VH1 logo appeals to its target audience as again it has bold font making it stand out to them. The colour purple is bright and stands out, meaning that it will attract the eye of potential viewers. The font used for the logo is very consistent and normal, this reflects what the music channel offers its audience.
Viva is a music channel owned by MTV, and has a similar target audience of 12 - 30 year olds. This music channel appeals to its target audience by playing mostly pop music and music that is in the charts, therefore it is quite a mainstream channel. The songs played on this channel are censored as the channel is family friendly. Artists that you may see appear regularly on this channel are Beyonce, Example and Avicii, whom are all well known artists from different genres, meaning that the channel is widening its scope. The logo for VIVA is very appealing to its target audience as it is bright and stands out, this represents the young target audience who are likely to be more edgy. Furthermore the bold capital letters used make it recognisable and it therefore stands out. The logo is also at an angle, which means it looks different conveying to the target audience that the channel is diverse.

AKA is an urban music channel that broadcasts grime and hip hop music, it has a target audience of 15 - 25 year olds. This music channel broadcasts mostly music from the grime and hip hop genre and it is a much more niche music channel compared to the other big names such as MTV. Artists that have appeared on AKA include Tinchy Stryder, Devlin, Professor Green and Tinie Tempah. The music channel has helped many of them build their fame. The AKA logo is very suitable to the genre it plays as the male figure we can see is very representative of the hip hop and grime genre. The colours black and red also connote danger which represents the genre very well.

Summary:
To conclude I believe that the research that I have taken into music channels has been very helpful as it has allowed me to further understand the music industry. This will help me when it comes to creating my music video as I will have wider knowledge of what I need to include in order to appeal to my target audience. This research has also allowed me to see what channel my music video would most fit, and I can now go about planning how to make my music video appeal to that target audience. It has also enabled me to see how numerous individual elements can be manipulated to appeal to a particular group of people.

  1. You have made a start in identifying a variety of music channels that appeal to a variety of audiences and you have also started to consider the purpose of each channel, by commenting on the target audience, artists that feature and the role of the logo. But the points that you have included are too vague and basic and this is because you have not explored the purpose of each point in enough detail, which can be achieved by focusing more on the role of the audience.

You also need to include the summary points, to demonstrate further understanding of the task and the role of the music industry.
