What is a music video - Miss Miller

A music video has multiple purposes, firstly it helps the artists target audience understand the material that the artist is singing about more effectively, therefore creating a relationship between the audience and the artist. It also gives the audience a visual which appeals to them, as they are less likely to feel bored.

The first major purpose of this music video by Chris Brown is to entertain the target audience. I believe that he executes this effectively through the use of choreography, for example we can see him as the focal point of the dancing throughout the music video. This would entertain his target audience as they are big fans of him. Furthermore the choreography used in this music video appeals to the audience visually, for example when we see Chris Brown and his back up dancers all dancing in sync, this is appealing to the audience and therefore they are more likely to enjoy the song. This is enhanced through the cinematography used as we see a long shot of them dancing allowing the audience to gain a good view of the choreography.

Another purpose of music videos is to attract a certain target audience, which for this music video would be mostly boys and girls aged 15 - 25. This is evident in this music video when Chris Brown says "up in this club bring me a bottle" and pretends to drink a bottle. This use of lyrics combined with visuals is appealing to the target audience as it is very relatable to them as they may desire to do the things Chris Brown is rapping about. Furthermore this enhances Chris Browns image making him an iconic figure in the eyes of the audience as he is talking although he owns the club.  The use of the micro elements mise en scene and sound have therefore been used here to attract the target audience.

This music video comes under the rap genre and it is very conventional. We can see that this music video is from the rap genre due to is lyrical content, for example Chris Brown raps about money in the line "just got rich". This is conventional of the rap genre as rap artists often boast about having a lot of money, and in turn this makes them appealing to their target audience as they seem like an iconic figure. Furthermore we can see this music video is conventional to the rap genre when we see a long shot of Lil Wayne. This use of cinematography allows us to see all of his clothing including his big chain. This allows the audience to identify him as a rap artist making the music video conventional to its genre.

    1) Use PEER to analyse points in detail
    2) Make sure you explain HOW/WHY it creates a certain reaction from the audience
    3) Explain how and why it appeals to a particular target audience.
    4) Elaborate on points further
