Initial group planning ideas - Miss Georgiou

The members in our group are myself, Beau Abery and Cara Gaffney. In our first meeting we discussed the initial ideas for our music video. We discussed what music genre we would be using in our music video, which we narrowed down to do, indie and dance. We decided to use the dance genre as we thought we could use the conventions of dance much better than the conventions of indie. Then we had to decide what artist from the dance genre we wanted to use, at first we decided red-light and their song 9ts baby. But after careful consideration and researching the lyrics we decided that there were not enough lyrics in this song. So instead we chose the artist sub focus and their song turn back time. We felt this song was best as the lyrics could be portrayed easily through visuals, therefore we could create the narrative aspect of the music video. This song also had a good fast beat therefore we could use fast editing to make it conventional to the dance genre. We also discussed the type of music video we wanted to create and we was stuck between narrative and performance. As a group we decided that we wanted to try to incorporate both a narrative aspect and a performance aspect into our music video.

On an A3 piece of paper we all put down ideas for our music video. These included, song choices, artists and music genres. This will help us as a group as we can see all the ideas that we have come up with and we can then  make a decision about which is best. Some of the ideas we came up with on our A3 piece of paper was; the indie genre and Oasis, Arctic monkeys, the dance genre and Redlight and Example. As a group we then evaluated all of our choices looking carefully at what we could do with each genre and song. I feel that using an A3 piece of paper to put down all of our ideas overall helped us a lot as a group.

In our next meeting we will be discussing applying for a music copyright, research into the music genre and the outline of our music video. This meeting will be important as it is vital that we get permission from our record label to use their song in our video. Furthermore we need to ensure that all group members are aware with the outline of our music video.

Group meetings and discussions:

We also did individual research into our chosen music genre and each gave feedback of what we found. This meant that each member of the group would research the genre and artist by watching music videos and analysing them. We then gave feedback about what we had discovered. This was helpful for the group as we each had our own individual ideas about what we could do with the song and genre, and we all contributed them together.

The feedback we all got was all put together and as a group we decided we wanted to the following outline for our music video.

  • A male and female characters.
  • Both characters had made choices they had regretted and wanted to turn back time.
  • The video would then follow a narrative of how they regret decisions the have made.
  • There is also a performance part when our artist is on stage performing in  a club.
After this we decided to storyboard what we had come up with. This meant planning what camera shot we would be using in each shot, the duration of the shot, the editing included and the characters and props used in the shot. This was helpful for us as when it comes to filming we can see the whole outline of the video with illustrations and instructions of what to include.

Group meetings:
It is important that as a group we keep up with the group meeting schedule. It is important that we this as it will allow us to develop our music video ideas and have a good final product. The group meetings also played a very important role as it allows us to make sure that we are up to date with all the deadlines and allows us to plan what we need to do for each task. This helped us as a group as it ensured that we had lots of different and fresh ideas for each part of our music video and ancillarys. Each member of the group went off and did their own individual research into the dance genre and other aspects of the music video, we then fedback our ideas to the rest of the group in the group meetings.

As a group I believe that we functioned well together as we successfully matched all of the deadlines and managed to work well together in our group meetings. We was all clear about what we had to do after each meeting, this made it easier for us to create our music video and ancillarys. Furthermore I believe that we communicated very well as a group, informing eachother about when we should meet up to film etc. This meant that the filming of our music video was quite smooth overall.

Photo shoot - Miss Miller.

For our music video we had to take a variety of pictures of our artist. We will be using these images on our digipak and magazine advert to appeal to the target audience and fans of the artist. It is important that we take effective and powerful images of our artist because they will be used to entice the audience to purchase the album. It is also important that we have a variety of pictures as we need to make sure each one is eye catching and will appeal to the audience.

We chose to take this particular image of our artist for our digipak and magazine advert. I feel that this is a very powerful image of our artist as he is looking directly at the camera meaning that the audience can engage with him more and therefore feel more of a relationship with him. The use of a baseball cap and sunglasses in this image makes the picture very conventional to the music genre as both pieces of iconography are related to the dance genre. These are both conventional as DJ's often wear these accessories to protect their eyes from strobe lighting when performing. Furthermore the artist is showing little emotion which make him seem mysterious to the target audience, urging them to find out more about the artist. The picture is also taken on a plain white background, thus making the artist stand out even more which means he is more eye catching to the target audience. The red baseball cap contrasts very well with the black t shirt, suggesting that the artist is original but also passionate. Furthermore the "Bulls" baseball cap connotes that he is a strong and courageous artist, this will appeal to the audience. In this image our artist is represented as being cool through the use of fashionable iconography such as the baseball cap and glasses. This makes him more desirable for the target audience, making them want to purchase his work. It also means that his identity is concealed, presenting him as a mysterious character and making the audience want to find out more about him buy purchasing his album.

This image is similar to the first picture we took and also is very powerful as the artist is looking directly down the
camera allowing the audience to create a relationship with them. This also draws the audience to purchase the product as the image is very powerful. We would include this image in both our digipak and our magazine advert as it is one of our strongest images. The editing that we have done to this image makes it very conventional to the dance genre as it looks very futuristic and technological, which are both conventions of the dance genre. This makes our artist very conventional to the dance genre, which is likely to persuade fans of the genre to purchase the album. Again we have included a baseball cap and sunglasses to make the image conventional to the genre and also add the element of mystery that could persuade the audience to find out more about the artist. I like this photo a lot as it stands out and is unique compared to other images. I also feel that it will attract the target audience very effectively. Again this represents my artist as a powerful and appealing character, however the edit makes him seem much more futuristic, making him conventional to the dance genre. I will be using this image in both my digipak and magazine advert as I believe it is the strongest and most conventional image that I have taken.

We chose to take this image as it shows our artist doing what he does best. This would be used in our digipaks as it is more of a detailed image and could be used on the same cover as the message to the fans. I feel that this image is very effective as it shows our artist as a DJ which is what he is most recognised for, therefore it is likely to attract the target audience and fans of the dance genre. This is also a very conventional image to the dance genre as the artist is wearing headphones which is an accessory heavily related to the dance genre. The use of headphones also signifies to the audience that the artist is a DJ and this therefore suggests to them what will be in the album and that it belongs to the genre of dance. Furthermore the edit on this image makes it seem even more conventional to the dance genre as it is although the audience is in the club looking at him and the blur effect suggests they may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, which are both conventions of the dance genre. I also believe that this image will help the audience build a relationship with the artist as they can see that he is a professional and this will urge them to idolise him.

Finally we have this image of our artist not looking at the camera. This image gives us another option for our digipaks and magazine advert, meaning we will have more of a variety. I like this image as it gives the audience a different perspective of our artist as he is looking into the distance. This portrays our artist in a different light compared to our other powerful images. It portrays him as being more human and suggests that he is thinking about something, thus making him more relatable to the audience. This shot is not as conventional as the other images we have taken, however it still includes the baseball cap which makes it slightly conventional to the dance genre. Furthermore the fact that he is wearing the baseball cap suggests to the audience that its his trademark as he is wearing it in previous images. This makes him more recognisable to the audience and keeps our images consistent throughout.

Conclusion:
I believe that as a group we used the photo shoot task very well to attract our audience to purchasing the product. I feel that we conveyed the artist as being very powerful which will appeal to the target audience and urge them to idolise him. Furthermore I believe that we used the images effectively in order to create a relationship with the audience as it is easy for them to relate to him as he is looking directly at them in many of the images. Looking back I believe that we could have included more of a variety of images in our photo shoot as some of them are quite similar and the audience may want to see different types of images.

As individuals in our group we will each use these images to create our own digipaks and magazine adverts for our album. We will then analyse what is good about each of ours and then combine them into one digipak and one magazine advert. This will ensure that we have an effective digipak and magazine advert to attract our target audience.

Filming schedule - Miss Georgiou

Why is a filming schedule important?
It is important that we have a filming schedule for our music video. This is to make sure that every member of the group is aware of the times that we will be filming the video. This means that each member can prepare for the role that they are needed for. Furthermore a filming schedule allows us to stay organised as a group and make sure that we meet all the deadlines for our music video.

We did follow the filming schedule for our music video, sticking to every deadline that we made for ourselves. As a result of this I feel we were able to create a very good music video.

Risk assessment - Miss Georgiou

It is important to do a risk assessment when it comes to filming my music video as the safety of all group members should be put first. Creating a risk assessment will allow us to keep all risks under control whilst filming. A risk assessment also allows us to prepare for any hazards that may take place.

The risk assessment will help us as a group when it comes to filming as we will all be well aware of the risks and hazards that could occur. As a result of this we will be able to make sure we minimalise the chances of these risks occurring. This will mean we will be able to concentrate on the filming of our music video.

Description of hazard
Prevention of hazard
Knocking into pedestrians.
Film in a non-built up area or make it very obvious to pedestrians so they can avoid you.
Falling onto train track.
Film well away from the track and ensure you take extra precaution when having to film near train.
Dropping camera when filming handheld shots.
Ensure that you are using the strap attached to the camera when filming shots which don’t require to tri-pod
Slipping in rain.
Being extra careful when moving especially when carrying equipment.
Falling down stairs.

Music video storyboards - Miss Georgiou

A storyboard is a graphic illustrator that organises the sequences of images within a video or film. The purpose of a storyboard is to organise which scene will be put where and the duration of the scene. It also allows us to plan what we will be including in that specific shot and what characters will be used. We used our primary research from questionaires and pie charts to help plan what we want to include in our music video. We did this by taking into account our target audiences feedback on subjects like where we should set the video and what props we should include. We also used secondary research that we carried out, for example we watched many other music videos from our genre and analysed what we thought worked well and we tried to incorporate it into our music video. This helped us a lot as we was able to see how a real music artist enticed their target audience.

As a group we all sat down and discussed the order of our music video. Then we put each shot into a storyboard and decided how long the shot should be taken for, what props would be included in the shot and what characters would be in the shot. We then drew up illustrations of what we hoped the scene would look like in that shot to help us when it came to filming each shot. We shared the responsibility as each member of the group was allocated a job, for example Beau's job was to draw the scene, Cara decided the duration of the shot and I decided what props and characters would be in each shot.

Planning editing styles - Miss Georgiou

Editing styles are vital in creating a music video as they play an essential role in creating the atmosphere and pace of the video. Editing also allows a link to be created between the visuals and music. Editing will play a very important role in our music video as pace is key due to the dance genre where the music is very quick.

The first piece of editing that we will be including in our video is slow editing. This editing style will be used at the beginning of the song when the music is slower. Here the timing of shots will be longer and this will mean that the music and visuals are linked and the video will therefore be conventional to Goodwins theory. Slow editing will also be used surrounding the male and female characters to show how boring and unhappy their lives are. I am also hoping that the big contrast between the fast and slow editing will attract the audience. The slow editing we will be using will not be used represent the artist as much, it will be used to represent the characters and portray the narrative.

The next editing style that we will be using in our music video is fast paced editing. We will create this editing style by putting together a sequence of shots with a short duration, this will mean that the camera is constantly cutting to different shots. This piece of editing will mostly be used when the music drops and the pace of the song increases, this will mean the music matches the visuals and it will be conventional to Goodwins theory. Furthermore fast paced editing is very conventional of the dance genre as it creates an energetic vibe. This piece of editing represents our artist as it shows that he has a fast paced and action packed lifestyle, which is something that will appeal to many members of the target audience.

Another piece of editing that we will be using is a time lapse. This piece of editing will be used when we film the female character sitting alone in a train station. We hope this will create the effect that she is isolated and lonely. Although this is not a conventional piece of editing for the dance genre, we hope that it will have the desired effect and portray our characters and the narrative effectively to our target audience.

In summary, I believe that the editing styles that we have selected for our music video will help the audience relate well with both the characters and the artist. Each editing style has been carefully chosen and we have made sure that it has the desired effect. I feel that the audience will be able to relate with the video through the atmosphere that we are portraying to them. Furthermore the link between the visuals and the music will appeal to them.

Planning lighting and colour - Miss Georgiou.

Lighting and colours are very important within music videos as they help set the atmosphere and create the scene. This makes it easier for the directors to portray a certain mood to the target audience. Lighting and colours can also make the music video conventional or diverse. Therefore it is important that we carefully consider what lighting and colours we shall be using within our music video. As a group we have carefully reviewed our options and planned what lighting and colour we will be using in each scene in our music video.

Lighting:

There will be a lot of low key lighting in our music video, especially when we are showing our artist performing in a club. In this shot there will be a lot of low key lighting, this will make the audience feel more involved in the club atmosphere and they will be able to relate with the video more. Furthermore the low key lighting used in the club will make the music video more convetional to the dance genre, this is likely to appeal to the target audience. The low key lighting will be in the background of the shot and the artist will be flashing in and out of light. This will make the shot look like a club environment and also the identity of the DJ will be concealed because of the
flashing lights, this will make the target audience want to find out more about him as he seems mysterious.

We will also be adding strobe lighting in the club scenes, which will again make the video conventional to the dance genre. The strobe lighting will be created by flashing lights on and off in a dark room. This will give the audience the effect of being inside a club and listening to music, meaning they will feel more involved in the music video. Furthermore the strobe lighting will create a dance atmosphere which is going to be in coordination with the music, meaning that the visuals and music will be in relation making the music video conventional to Goodiwns theory.

We will be using high key natural lighting in our music video when we are showing the female begging for money in the park. Here the lighting will be high due to the natural daylight. In using high lighting here the audience will be able to fully see the female character and see how vulnerable she is. This will allow the audience to sympathise with the female character and therefore they will be able to build a connection with her. This high key lighting will be in contrast with the dark mood that is being set in the narrative of the music video, and I believe that this will shock the audience as they can see how much the female character regrets where she is in life. The use of natural lighting in this scene will also add a sense of realism to the music video, making the narrative more believable for the audience.

I will also be using negative lighting in my music video. This piece of lighting will be used when the female character is filmed with a time lapse. I will include flashes of negative lighting in this shot. This will make the female character look more vulnerable as the negative lighting creates a cold effect surrounding her; suggesting to the audience that she is homeless and therefore cold all the time. This will again make the audience sympathise with the character and feel the pain that she is feeling.

Colours:

The colours that we will be using in this music video will vary throughout. For both the male and female character we will be using dark and dull colours to demonstrate how they are not happy with life and wish they could "turn back time". The dark colours will allow the audience to identify that both characters are clearly unhappy, this will make the narrative more easy to understand for the audience. Furthermore the dark dull colours used surrounding the characters will set a dull mood during their scenes in the music video, emphasising how dull the characters lives are. We will be using these dark dull colours when the male character is on the train to work and when the female is sitting in the train station begging for money.

Contrastingly we will be using bright colours surrounding the music artist, such as his bright red hat, which will represent passion and make him more relatable to the target audience. We will also be using a lot of different colour tints when the artist is on screen to create that club setting and make the audience feel although they are actually in the club listening to the artist. These colours will be used when the artist is on stage performing. Using bright colours surrounding the artist will also show the difference between the artists lively lifestyle and the characters dull and boring lifestyle. In addition, the bright colours surrounding the artist will attract the audiences eye towards him, making him the focal point of the music video, allowing them to idolise him.

When the narrative goes back 'in time' to the conventional club setting, there will obviously be the use of the bright colours lights and there will also be coloured tints over the whole picture which is very conventional of dance music videos. These colour tints contradict the dull colouring that has previously been seen in the video, it will help to create the lively and upbeat mood that is being expressed by the characters to the audience. Colours will also be evident in the artists performance, once again the coloured lights and tints conform to the dance genre and create the lively atmosphere that the target audience want to see.

To conclude, the planning that I have taken into lighting and colour will help me a lot when it comes to creating my music video. This will allow me to create a music video that appeals to my target audience through the colours and lighting. By incorporating the conventions of the dance genre in the lighting and colour categories, the audience get to see exactly what they want, this helps create a relationship between the audience and the artist. Finally I believe that the colour and lighting that I have chosen will be very effective in creating the artists image and portraying the characters in the narrative to the audience.

Planning artist image - Miss Georgiou

An artist representation is important in a music video as it makes a music video more appealing to the target audience. It also enables the audience to create a relationship with the artist as they can share similar interests.  Through giving the artist an image the music video also has its own image as it seems more unique and tailored to the artist. This is something that would attract fans of the artist, who are attracted to the artists image.

Our artist will wear:
Red Baseball Cap
Plain Black T-Shirt
Headphones
Sunglasses (Provisional)

We have taken a very conventional approach to our artists image as we have tried to make him seem as conventional as possible. The red baseball cap has been chosen as it is something that will appeal to young people, which is mostly what our target audience is made up of, this will make it easier for them to relate with him. Furthermore a baseball cap will depict the artist as being cool and up to date with the latest fashion trends, making him seem more desirable to the audience. The colour red also connotes passion to the target audience making our artist seem passionate and the target audience will therefore warm to him. A plain black t-shirt has been chosen as it makes our artist seem original and he is not tied down to any brands. This is something that may appeal to an audience who attempts to be diverse in an era when it is essential to have all the big name brands. Headphones are an important accessory in creating our artists image. Headphones are very conventional and this will make it easy for the audience to identify the artist. We are not 100% sure whether we will be putting sunglasses on our artist as of yet. We feel that this could benefit our artists image as it will make him look cool which will appeal to the target audience, however there is a risk that it could make the music video too conventional.

Planning cinematography - Miss Georgiou

The cinematography used in a music video is essential as it allows the audience to connect with the artist. Different camera shots create different effects within a music video, this helps portray the atmosphere to the audience make them feel a certain type of way. I will be discussing the different camera shots that I will be including in my music video and what effect I hope they will have.

The first shot that we will be including in our music video is a close up. This shot will be taken on both the females face and our artists face. This is a conventional shot in music videos as it allows the audience to fully see the emotion in the characters face, this helps them connect with the artist more and therefore feel more connected with the music video. We will be using this shot to show the unhappy emotion on the girls face making the audience sympathise with her. We will also use it when the artist is performing on stage; here a close up will allow the target audience engage with the artist. Using a close up on the artist also enables the audience to gain full visibility on their idol, this is something that will satisfy them.

The next shot that we will be using within our music video is a high angle shot. This shot will be used when we are showing the female character and will show her sitting on the floor begging for money. Using a high angle shot here will make the female character look more vulnerable as she looks weaker because the audience are looking down on her. This will help the audience connect with the female character as they will sympathise for her as she looks like she needs help. Furthermore it will help us portray the female character to the audience as we want to make her seem vulnerable.

Another shot that we will be including in our music video is a long shot. We will be using a long shot when we see the artist performing on the decks to the rest of the crowd. We hope that this will make the audience feel although they are in the crowd as the camera will be positioned where the crowd would be standing. This will make it easier for the audience to relate to the music video as they will feel although they are at the actual performance. Furthermore this shot will allow the audience to see the artist performing which is something that will satisfy them.

We will also be using a tracking shot in our music video, this shot will mostly be used on the male character as we follow him on his daily commute to work. Through using this shot the audience will feel although they are going along on the journey with the character, this will help them relate with him. Furthermore using a tracking shot will help give the audience an insight on the characters life and they will be able to see how fed up he is of having a boring life.

The final shot we will use in our music video is a point of view shot from the female characters point of view. This shot will show the male character cross paths with the female character and put money in her hat however as the male character walks past he doesn't look back. This portrays many things to the audience that relate to the narrative we have created. The point of view shot we will use will also show that the girl is below him as she is positioned on the floor looking up at him.

To summarise, I believe that we have carefully selected a variety of different camera shots that we will use in our music video. The shots we have chosen will help depict our characters to the audience and also help our audience relate with the artist. I also believe that the camera shots we have chosen will fit in well in our music video as they are conventional to the genre, this will make our music video more conventional overall, which is something that will appeal to an audience.

Planning iconography and setting - Miss Georgiou

The setting and iconography is something that is very important within a music video. The iconography is important as it includes things like musical instruments, flash cars etc. These are important to the music video as they enable the audience to view the artist in a certain way for example by including a flash car the artist is being represented as having a lot of money, this making them seem more appealing to the target audience. The setting is also important to a music video as it sets the atmosphere for the rest of the music video. For example if it was set on a beach the audience are able to see that it is going to be a relaxed music video. The setting is also important as it can make a music video conventional to its genre.

Location 1 - An empty park early in the morning.

We have chose this location to display the representation of our female character. We feel that putting her in an empty park early in the morning will make her seem isolated, this will therefore convey to the target audience that she has made some bad decisions in her life as she is waking up in a park. This location will also make it appear to the audience that the female is homeless. The action that will take place in this location is the young girl waking up and looking very isolated and lonely. Furthermore we will be using a time lapse effect here which will show loads of people passing her as she sits on the floor begging for money. This will portray to the audience that she has no one to care for her. This location that we have chosen has its limitations however. It will be difficult for us to create the time lapse effect as the location we have chosen is usually very quiet.

The location that we have chosen has minimal, if any health and safety risks.

If the weather is bad when it comes to filming we may have to change our location as it is outside. As a back up plan we have decided to use a dark room with graffiti on the walls.

Location 2 - A club.

We have chosen this location to show our artist playing to hundreds of people. We feel that this location is best for this as it is very conventional and will therefore make our artist appear to be more relatable to our target audience. This location will also portray to the audience that our artist is an idol as there will be people dancing to his music and screaming at him to get his attention. The action that will take place in this location is people dancing and we will also show close ups of the artist on his DJ decks with earphones. The limitations of this location is that it will be hard to replicate a club setting in a normal room. It will also be hard to get a large amount of people together to make it appear as a club setting.

There are also minimal health and safety risks in this location.

Bad weather will not effect this location as it is inside.

Location 3 - Train station.

We have chose this location so that we can portray our male character to the audience. We feel that this location best fits in with the narrative that we want to depict to our target audience. In this location we will show the male character waiting for a train to commute to work. We will be portraying him as being fed up with the same thing every day. The limitations of this location is that there will be a lot of other people there who are getting on the train and this could interfere with our filming. Furthermore the trains are very loud and we may have to edit that sound out or make it less heavy.

Health and safety risks at this location are very prominent. There will be a risk of falling onto the tracks when filming, in order to overcome this we will make sure that we film well away from the tracks.

Bad weather will not really have an effect on this location as the station we plan to film at has a roof.

Iconography:

1. Cup of tea.
This piece of iconography will be used by our female character. The tea will be in a paper cup and the female character will be grasping it with her hands to show that she is cold. This piece of iconography will portray to the audience that the character does not have a lot of money as she is drinking a cup of tea in a park, this suggests that she is homeless. This iconography is not conventional to the music genre as it is being used to create a narrative and narrative style music videos are unconventional in the dance genre.

2. Hat.
This iconography will be raggy old hat that is placed on the floor in the park to collect money. This piece of iconography will depict again to the audience that the girl has no money and will therefore help tell the narrative in our music video. Again this is an unconventional piece of iconography as it is being used to tell a narrative.

3. Briefcase.
This iconography will be used by our male character and it will be a plain black briefcase. This iconography will help the audience to see that he is in a professional job and also see that he is being portrayed as ordinary and almost boring. This iconography is also unconventional for the dance genre as it is being used to create a narrative.

4. Headphones.
These will be 'Beats' Headphones that are high quality and a well recognised brand within the music genre. These will be worn by our artist who is a DJ. This piece of iconography will portray our artist as being s professional DJ to the target audience. Furthermore it will allow the audience to recognise him as the artist and they will therefore be able to create a relationship with him. This is a conventional piece of iconography as headphones are often seen as a symbol of music and they often appear in dance music videos.
